Ko wai mātou | About us as an organisation

At Te Kura Matatini ki Otago/Otago Polytechnic, we are committed to attracting, developing and retaining kaimahi (staff) who are passionate, creative, future-focused and dedicated to help set the direction for quality vocational and applied learning to meet tomorrow’s needs.

We are guided by our values and we are proud to be Rainbow Tick certified. We aspire to create a working environment that is inclusive and meets the aspirations of mana whenua ensuring equity for Māori and increasing access for all.

Mō te tūraka mahi | About the role

We’re looking for experienced Mechanical and Electrical Engineering professionals who are keen to share their practical knowledge, industry experience and enthusiasm with the next generation.

You don’t necessarily need to come from a teaching background. If you’re an experienced engineer who enjoys explaining how things work, supporting others to develop, and seeing people succeed, this could be the career move you’ve been looking for. Support is available to gain a tertiary teaching qualification if you don’t already hold one.

As part of our Engineering Technologies team, you will be responsible for guiding, teaching and contributing towards the learner journey. You’ll teach both theory and practical engineering skills, contribute to course development, support ākonga (learners) with projects and assessments, and help ensure our teaching remains connected to contemporary industry practice.

The role includes face to face and blended teaching and learning for theory and practical work.

There’s also an exciting international dimension to these roles. You’ll contribute to The Otago Institute (the joint education programme between Otago Polytechnic and Hunan Institute of Engineering in Xiangtan, China), teaching engineering subjects in English and bringing our practical Kiwi approach to an international learning environment. These positions require the ability to travel to China at least twice a year for around two months at a time as part of a small teaching team.

Ko wai koe | About you

We’re particularly interested in hearing from people with Mechanical or Electrical Engineering backgrounds, although experience across other engineering disciplines may also be considered. Otago Polytechnic delivers Civil, Electrical and Mechanical diploma and degree programmes, so adaptability and a willingness to grow are important.

You’ll bring:

· A relevant engineering qualification

· Current or recent engineering experience

· Strong practical and technical knowledge

· The ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and engagingly

· A genuine interest in mentoring and developing others

· The flexibility to work across a range of engineering subjects

· A collaborative, practical and learner-focused approach

· A commitment to supporting learners from diverse cultural and learning backgrounds

· A willingness and ability to travel to China as part of the role at least twice a year for two months each time

Already have teaching experience? Great. Haven’t taught before? Don’t let that stop you in applying. A recognised teaching qualification, or willingness to work towards one, forms part of the role expectations, and support is available to gain the qualification.

Applicants will be people who are willing to travel to China, and who are adaptable and able to teach a range of subjects to cover other staff as they travel.

The successful applicant will uphold our organisation’s commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi by continuously developing and upholding your understanding of our obligations and connection with Te Tiriti as an individual and as an organisation

Through recognition, empowerment and inclusion, you will give greater acknowledgement to the unmet needs of Māori, Pasifika and disabled people and their whanau.

You will have demonstrable health and safety best practices and enjoy being part of a team who support each other.  You will easily be able to build and maintain relationships and communicate well via email, phone and face-to-face.
